“Not bad for forty-two,” she said as she stood in front of the bathroom mirror. She had done this so many times it became routine. She turned from one side to the next, and then she closed her eyes. Slowly she opened her eyes, allowing her eyes to adjust to the light again, she looked into the mirror and gasped! She grabbed her towels and wrapped them tightly around her, and then she turned to look at the large iridescent blue eye that stared back at her from the mirror.
“Who are you? What are you? Why are you here in my mirror,” she asked, staring at the eye, captivated by its clarity, when it suddenly blinked. Unsettling her even more, a deep rich voice that seemed to caress her with every word crooned, “I am here because you summoned me.”
Mesmerized by the stunning voice, she relaxed and closed her eyes… time stood still. She had no idea how long she had been “gone,” but as she became aware, she could feel the penetrating stare of the eye in her mirror.
She opened her eyes and found she was still standing in the bathroom facing the mirror with a brilliant blue eye staring back at her expectantly. She quickly gathered her thoughts and remembered that the eye said that she had summoned it. She looked back at the eye; it was still staring at her intently.
“If I summoned you,” she stammered nervously, “why am I afraid of you?”
She watched as the pupil got smaller and the beautiful blue eye narrowed and became dark and menacing. She shuddered and looked toward the place where the door used to be, but there was no door.
“You are afraid of me because you are afraid of what the answers might be to the questions you want to ask,” a menacing voice hissed. Gone was the magnificent blue eye, the beautiful rich voice… Then she heard a deep rumbling laughter and a penetrating chill spread throughout her body.
“Ask your questions now,” the eye snarled, “before I tire of your presence.”
She wasn’t sure what was happening, but she managed to composed herself and ask, “How and why did I summon you?”
Suddenly the eye twinkled and chuckled, then answered in a softer voice, “That is two questions dear, but I will answer both.”
“Wait,” she almost shouted, “How many questions do I get?”
“Three of course,” the eye answered, sounding amused, “and I will let that last one go.”
Suddenly, the room filled with mist and she thought she could hear music when a soft melodic voice began to recite:
You summoned me by closing your eyes
While standing here in front of your mirror
You clicked your heels and you wished
That something magical would appear.
Now you know how you summoned me
Question two had you wondering why
You know those reasons better than I
Within you is where that answer lies
Before you hastily ask your next questions
While you still have me in your command
You will never have this opportunity again
So it is important that you understand
The eye paused for a moment and before it could continue, she hastily asked “Is there any way to get more questions?”
The mist cleared as quickly as it had appeared and she could no longer see the eye.
As she watched, one word appeared on the mirror…
